November 2, 2009 – Now that Halloween is done and gone, you know what that means. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s – and in an effort not to forget anyone – Hanukkah, Kwanza and Epiphany are barreling their way straight for us.
When I was a kid, time off from school for the holidays meant a lot of time for reading, movies, playing with the new toys and games Santa brought and hanging out with friends. But it never involved anything like a real vacation. Looking back though, there were things that we only did around the holidays that became tradition for us, year after year, and became part of our holiday vacation at home.
As someone who loves to travel, when I visit my home town to see family I also engage as a tourist. And those traditions I took part in as a kid come back to me. Like seeing the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, catching a look at the enormous decorated tree at Rockefellar Center, visiting Santa Claus at the flagship Macy’s or Bloomingdales in Manhattan and ice skating at Central Park’s Wollman Rink. New traditions include the thousands of lights at the Bronx Zoo, the Nutcracker and free ice skating on the Pond at Bryant Park (if you bring your own skates – rentals available for a fee).
Whether you stay put for the holidays or not, what’s your favorite holiday tradition? Let us know! Send us the details of your most loved holiday locales and activities so we can put together an article of ideas for our readers to enjoy and perhaps consider doing themselves. Please send it to us at submissions@where2nowmag.com along with your name so we can contact you if we use your story.
And thanks for sharing!

Mostly I like to be home (as in, the house I live in) for holidays, but I had a good New Year’s at Disney (countdown & characters), a great Memorial Day in Costa Rica (outdoorsy oasis), a President’s Day in Las Vegas (Seminar & Cirque), and a Thanksgiving in the Bahamas/Miami (South Beachin’ and Cruise eatin’).
