August 10, 2009 – I know times are tough for a lot of people. This year a vacation was out of reach for many. And if we don’t know how long this recession will last at least we know that the term “staycation” will probably be with us for quite awhile. Local advertising has seen to that.
But what I heard on the radio this morning really blew my mind. I still haven’t been able to categorize it. Absurd? Ridiculous? Just plain dumb?
The commercial was for a mattress company. And the pitch was essentially, don’t spend your money on a vacation, buy a new mattress instead and vacation at home in bed. Huh? Are you serious? Did I mention that this commercial was delivered by the narrator in earnest? It wasn’t pitched for laughs. She urged the listener not to spend thousands of dollars on a hotel and airfare, but instead to purchase a mattress and enjoy meals and drinks in bed, just like a real vacation. I swear on my mother.
Now, I enjoy a good night’s sleep as much as anyone, but if faced with the decision after working all year long to travel on my vacation or spend it in bed on a new mattress…man, I hope they ditch this commercial real soon because I can already see that it’s going to drive me out of my everloving mind if I have to hear it over and over again. Can someone please tell me who dreams up this stuff? And do they really get paid to do it? Jeeesh!
What’s your take? Stay at home in bed or go out and see the world?
